v1 v2 1 [[PageOutline]] 2 1 3 = Move our Telehouse Servers from 25 Broadway to 111 8th Avenue = 2 4 3 This is a proposal for how we could move our servers to our new Colo facility on 111 8th Avenue. 5 This is a proposal for how we move our servers to our new Colo facility on 111 8th Avenue. 6 7 == Communication Plan == 8 9 === Lowdown === 10 11 We should start with a Lowdown as soon as possible that describes how we went through this process and how the move gives us twice the bandwidth and electricity. I also think it's important to mention Micah's role in particular and our plans for working more closely with Riseup. 12 13 === Service Advisory == 14 15 Once we have a date for the big move, we should announce it as a [wiki:email_announcement_lists service advisory]. 16 17 === All Members List == 18 19 One month before our scheduled move, we should sent an email to [wiki:email_announcement_lists the all members list] announcing the project. 20 21 === After the move === 22 23 After the move we should immediately send a service advisory and follow it up with another Lowdown. 24 25 == Server Move Plan == 4 26 5 27 This proposal makes the following assumptions: 6 28 7 * Telehouse would allow us to have a 30 day overlap period in which we have access to both centers 8 * Telehouse's network connection will allow us to have access to our full IP range in both locations at the same time 9 * dkg will be gone for most of July 10 * In August we'll start being very busy preparing for the Social Forum of the Americas and possibly the Brazil/Techmeet 29 * Our rack and cross connects are in place and functional on August 1 30 * We are able to access our Hurricane Electric IP range in both locations in August 11 31 12 32 == Phase 0 == 13 33 14 Site visit. I'd like us to plan a Staten Island facilities site visit, as soon as possible. Before we make an agreement, it would be good to know what we're getting into, what kind of cabinet to expect, is there wireless access in the lounge, etc. Ideally as many of us as possible would make this trek (Alfredo, Jamie, dkg, Micah, anyone else?). 15 16 == Phase 1 == 17 18 Phase 1 refers to the first two - three weeks of the overlap period. 34 Phase 1 refers to the first two weeks of the overlap period. 19 35 20 36 * Install switch. We have a spare Cisco switch at Telehouse which is just there in case our existing switch dies. This should be installed in the new location. 21 * Install [ticket:186 Baytech RPC] power monitors. We have two at Telehouse that are not yet being used. These could be installed in Staten Island.22 * Purchase a lower power, small form factor computer with lots of free PCI slots. Purchase two new Octopus cards and setup a [wiki:telehouse_serial_access new serial console server] in Staten Island.37 * Install [ticket:186 Baytech RPC] power monitors. We have two at Telehouse that are not yet being used. These could be installed at 111 8th Avenue. 38 * Purchase a lower power, small form factor computer with lots of free PCI slots. Purchase two new Octopus cards and setup a [wiki:telehouse_serial_access new serial console server] in 111 8th Avenue. 23 39 * Install new Riseup, MFPL and Tachanka servers 24 40 25 41 == Phase 2 == 26 42 27 Phase 2 will happen sometime in the last week or two of the overlap period.43 Phase 2 will happen sometime around the middle of August. 28 44 29 Pick a night and show up at 25 Broadway with a van at 2:00 AM. Take down all servers and transport them to Staten Island.45 Pick a night and show up at 25 Broadway with a van at 2:00 AM. Take down all servers and transport them to 111 8th Avenue. 30 46 31 47 Since we are keeping our IP addresses, in theory, this should just work with only a few hours of downtime in the middle of the night. With a couple extra hours of downtime, we could ensure that all servers are properly rack mounted and really set things up so expansion will be easy. 48 49 We might also want to put a call out (maybe on Radical Techie or other local lists) asking for volunteers. We could all meet up in advance, have some food together and make it an all night party :).
