Move our Telehouse Servers from 25 Broadway to 111 8th Avenue

This is a proposal for how we move our servers to our new Colo facility on 111 8th Avenue.

Communication Plan

Lowdown

We should start with a Lowdown as soon as possible that describes how we went through this process and how the move gives us twice the bandwidth and electricity. I also think it's important to mention Micah's role in particular and our plans for working more closely with Riseup.

Service Advisory ==

Once we have a date for the big move, we should announce it as a service advisory.

All Members List ==

One month before our scheduled move, we should sent an email to the all members list announcing the project.

After the move

After the move we should immediately send a service advisory and follow it up with another Lowdown.

Server Move Plan

This proposal makes the following assumptions:

  • Our rack and cross connects are in place and functional on August 1
  • We are able to access our Hurricane Electric IP range in both locations in August

Phase 0

Phase 1 refers to the first two weeks of the overlap period.

  • Install switch. We have a spare Cisco switch at Telehouse which is just there in case our existing switch dies. This should be installed in the new location.
  • Install Baytech RPC power monitors. We have two at Telehouse that are not yet being used. These could be installed at 111 8th Avenue.
  • Purchase a lower power, small form factor computer with lots of free PCI slots. Purchase two new Octopus cards and setup a new serial console server in 111 8th Avenue.
  • Install new Riseup, MFPL and Tachanka servers

Phase 2

Phase 2 will happen sometime around the middle of August.

Pick a night and show up at 25 Broadway with a van at 2:00 AM. Take down all servers and transport them to 111 8th Avenue.

Since we are keeping our IP addresses, in theory, this should just work with only a few hours of downtime in the middle of the night. With a couple extra hours of downtime, we could ensure that all servers are properly rack mounted and really set things up so expansion will be easy.

We might also want to put a call out (maybe on Radical Techie or other local lists) asking for volunteers. We could all meet up in advance, have some food together and make it an all night party :).
