Common Services
This space outlines the services MF/PL members can access. The most common services members use on the MF/PL server infratstructure include:
- Websites. May First/People Link members can create any kind of web site they want, using SecureFTP to copy files over, or using our members control panel to instal a drupal or Mediawiki. You can also install by hand most other major web applications, like WordPress.
- Email. Despite claims that email is dead, our members use it and use it massively. You can add as many email accounts, and then check your email using your own email client on your phone or desktop computer, or you can use our webmail system.
- Email lists. Email lists are one of the most frequently requested services. You can create as many email lists as you want and make them public or private.
In addition to these common tools, we have many other services available to the public and to our members.
Special Services
Share resources and knowledge about software that can be installed on MFPL servers for your website, organization communication, archiving and sharing documents and more.
- Instant Messaging (xmpp). We run our own Instant Messaging and voice service. Any member with a valid May First/People Link user account can start using it immediately. By using an open protocol, May First/People Link users can communicate with other services that also use the XMPP protocol. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/ross
- Share documents. May First/People Link members can share and synchronize documents with other users through our owncloud service. In addition to sharing with your friends, you can synchronize the documents to your own computer or your phone. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie
- Share spreadsheets. We also have a combination wiki + spreadsheet accessible via https://calc.mayfirst.org/. Anyone can use it to collaboratively and simultaneously work on spreadsheet documents. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie
- Social Networking. You won't find us on Facebook, but you will find us on https://social.mayfirst.org/, May First/People Link's social networking site. Unlike similar corporate services, social.mayfirst.org is federated - meaning you can be friends with people who are on other servers. There are hundreds of other sites running the samesoftware. Maintainer: ?
- Jitsi Meet. We have our own web-based video conference. You need a recent version of Firefox or Chrome or Chromium and then simply go to: meet.mayfirst.org. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie
- Mumble. Need a simple, audio-only conference system that runs over the Internet on Windows, Linux, Mac and even your android phone? Our mumble server is the way to go. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/jaimev (see #10641)
- We offer two different webmail services, one is called Horde (maintained by https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie) and the other is called Roundcube (maintained by https://id.mayfirst.org/srevilak).
- Icecast allows users to broadcast audio and video to a mass audience. Maintainer: ?
- Trac. That the site you are looking at. It's our internal support tracking system. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/dkg
- OpenPGP server. May First/People Link contributes to the global network of OpenPGP key servers with keys.mayfirst.org. This service isn't limited to just May First/People Link members, but is available to everyone on the Internet. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/dkg
- The Members control panel allows members to update their services. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie
- To enable members to login to various services with their existing username and password, we have a login service.
Development Services and services on the chopping block
These services are not recommended for general use because they are experimental or being considered for retirement:
- Mexcla. May First/People Link believes in language justice - the ability for everyone to speak in their chosen langugae. Toward this goal, we have developed a conferencing system that allows for simultaneous interpretation. The software, known as mexcla, can be accessed via the phone, voice over IP or via a web site. Maintainer: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie
- LimeSurvey provides the ability to survey a group of people via the web: http://survey.mayfirst.org. See #10638
- Live provides video conferencing via the web: https://live.mayfirst.org/
- Big Blue Button is an online conference system: https://bbb.mayfirst.org/. See #10639.
Proposed new services
- Setup our own git server (see #8033)
- Setup a loomio instance
