v3 v4 1 1 [[PageOutline]] 2 2 3 = Move our Telehouse Servers from 25 Broadway to111 8th Avenue =3 = Move our Telehouse Servers from Telehouse 25 Broadway to XO at 111 8th Avenue = 4 4 5 This is a proposal for how we move our servers to our new Colo facility on 111 8th Avenue. 5 People who have confirmed to help: Jamie, Daniel, Alfredo, Micah, Doug, Matt, Andy 6 6 7 == Communication Plan == 7 Vehicles: Doug has offered his car (which is tight on space). Jamie will be looking into renting either a car or a van. 8 8 9 === Lowdown === 9 What to bring: A government issued picture ID, comfortable clothes 10 10 11 We should start with a Lowdown as soon as possible that describes how we went through this process and how the move gives us twice the bandwidth and electricity. I also think it's important to mention Micah's role in particular and our plans for working more closely with Riseup. 11 == Saturday, 11:00 pm == 12 12 13 === Service Advisory === 13 We all meet at 25 Broadway. I just sent in a request to reserve a conference room. We'll probably all want to collect in the lobby of the building, since only Daniel and myself have badges to allow us upstairs. We'll be sure to have pizza and other food available (and coffee!). 14 14 15 Once we have a date for the big move, we should announce it as a [wiki:email_announcement_lists service advisory].15 For the next hour we'll eat, drink, and plan the details of the move and various jobs. 16 16 17 == = All Members List ===17 == Sunday Midnight == 18 18 19 One month before our scheduled move, we should sent an email to [wiki:email_announcement_lists the all members list] announcing the project.19 We dispatch a two person team to the XO facilities in 111th 8th Avenue (XO crew). Their job is to coordinate the transition of the IP addresses from Telehouse to XO and test that all IP addresses work at XO facilities. I'm in communication with HE about the timing, so they should be prepared to make the change over. We'll schedule the change over for 1:30 am. 20 20 21 === After the move === 21 The remaining crew loads all equipment that is not currently plugged in to the car/van 22 22 23 After the move we should immediately send a service advisory and follow it up with another Lowdown. 23 == Sunday 1:00 am == 24 24 25 == Server Move Plan == 25 Downtime begins. We run updates on all machines (most of them have pending kernel upgrades) and shut them down after the upgrade. As each machine is shut down, it is unplugged and loaded into the car/van. When the last computer is shutdown, the Telehouse crew phones the XO crew to let them know that we can transition the IP addresses. 26 26 27 This proposal makes the following assumptions: 27 == Sunday 2:00 am == 28 28 29 * Our rack and cross connects are in place and functional on August 1 30 * We are able to access our Hurricane Electric IP range in both locations in August 29 We drive the servers to 111 8th Avenue. 31 30 32 == = Phase 0 ===31 == Sunday 2:30 am == 33 32 34 Phase 1 refers to the first two weeks of the overlap period.33 We unload the machines and bring them up to XO. 35 34 36 * Install switch. We have a spare Cisco switch at Telehouse which is just there in case our existing switch dies. This should be installed in the new location. 37 * Install [ticket:186 Baytech RPC] power monitors. We have two at Telehouse that are not yet being used. These could be installed at 111 8th Avenue. 38 * Purchase a lower power, small form factor computer with lots of free PCI slots. Purchase two new Octopus cards and setup a [wiki:telehouse_serial_access new serial console server] in 111 8th Avenue. 39 * Install new Riseup, MFPL and Tachanka servers 35 == Sunday 3:00 am == 40 36 41 === Phase 1 === 37 We install the machines that have rails and attach rails to the rail-less machines. 42 38 43 Phase 1 will happen sometime around the middle of August. 39 == Sunday 4:30 am == 44 40 45 Pick a night and show up at 25 Broadway with a van at 2:00 AM. Take down all servers and transport them to 111 8th Avenue.41 Trouble-shooting and debugging followed by breakfast :). 46 42 47 Since we are keeping our IP addresses, in theory, this should just work with only a few hours of downtime in the middle of the night. With a couple extra hours of downtime, we could ensure that all servers are properly rack mounted and really set things up so expansion will be easy.48 43 49 We might also want to put a call out (maybe on Radical Techie or other local lists) asking for volunteers. We could all meet up in advance, have some food together and make it an all night party :).
