    v3 v4
1 In our work at various International events with web-based video and web-based streaming, we have encountered some problems that demand our movement's attention.
1= Cochabamba to Cancun: Maximizing Global Participation =
    22
3 1 -- At this point, streaming requires that people with the information be in one location which makes it impossible to truly cover the impact of something like the upcoming Cancun conference in which there will be activities in many places all over the world.
3The CMPCC forum in Cochambamba in April 2010 was a tremendous leap forward in mobilizing a global movement around a focused set of goals.
    44
5 2 -- Not enough people are streaming and those who are are often forced to improvise outlets or use whatever stream capability they can find making for a very messy information flow.
5The COP 16 in Cancun in November 2010 represents the next step in the mobilization effort.
    66
7 3 -- It's not easy for people who are videoing activities to upload their videos to a centralized site and even more difficult for people to actually edit and save that content. Finally, people who are interested in watching videos often have difficulty finding, searching and navigating such sites.
7Despite major advances in Internet and alternative media, we are still facing significant hurdles in both moblization and collaboration. The primary hurdle is that full participation requires travel to the site of the mobilization. For any movement, but particularly an environmental movement of people with few resources, this hurdle is unacceptable. We made significant progress in this regard in Cochabamba by providing a live video stream of the major events, which allowed hundreds of more people the ability to watch the proceedings. However, we still face obstacles including:
    88
9 With increasing participation in the convergences world-wide (and their increasing number) and the broadening participation from so many countries, we need to broaden and improve our on-line capabilities in this area and that requires tackling these problems.
9 1. Most tech and video work was cocentrated in the hands of people physically on location who were overwhelmed with logistical and other tech issues that competed with the task of distributing the proceedings and experiences outside of the event location.
10 1. Not enough people are live video streaming and those that are streaming are sending to a hodge podge of proprietary services making it difficult to share and collaborate.
11 1. Not enough people who are video taping activities are following through to upload their videos to any site, much less a centralized site.
12 1. Not enough people are notified about the video schedule with enough advance notice to organize screenings or otherwise plan to watch
    1013
11 We are proposing developing one website capable of doing live feed display and archive on demand.
14Additionally, we expect new opportunities in Cancun that were not available in Cochamba:
     15
16 1. More protest/demostration oriented events instead of forums. These events, when provided via a live video stream, can make a significantly more emotional impact than when viewed on demand
17 1. Simultaneous actions in other cities. Based on initial organizing events, we expect to see major demonstrations in other locations, providing an opportunity for us to display, live, events happening in concert from around the world.
     18
19With increasing participation in the convergences world-wide (and their increasing number) and the broadening participation from so many countries, we need to broaden and improve the number of both video creators as well as video consumers.
     20
     21== Proposal ==
     22
23We propose organizing an international campaign to capture video related to Cochabamba to Cancun during the period of the COP16 conference that will provide a means for displaying simultaneous live video feeds from multiple locations, full archiving of all contributed video, and a means for easily finding and playing video on demand.
