In our work at various International events with web-based video and web-based streaming, we have encountered some problems that demand our movement's attention.

1 -- At this point, streaming requires that people with the information be in one location which makes it impossible to truly cover the impact of something like the upcoming Cancun conference in which there will be activities in many places all over the world.

2 -- Not enough people are streaming and those who are are often forced to improvise outlets or use whatever stream capability they can find making for a very messy information flow.

3 -- It's not easy for people who are videoing activities to upload their videos to a centralized site and even more difficult for people to actually edit and save that content. Finally, people who are interested in watching videos often have difficulty finding, searching and navigating such sites.

With increasing participation in the convergences world-wide (and their increasing number) and the broadening participation from so many countries, we need to broaden and improve our on-line capabilities in this area and that requires tackling these problems.

We are proposing developing one website capable of doing live feed display and archive on demand.

In this system:

Anyone can feed video into the live stream. The site would be capable of taking and display various streams at once and the viewer can choose which stream he or she is watching. A producer will select the stream that is the "default" at the moment.

In this way, we can stream demonstrations throughout the world in support of the Cancun actions: live and simultaneously.

At the same time, all video streamed will be archived.

Those archives will join other material in the archives section of the site: directly uploaded video, links to video on other sites, rss feeds of videos stored elsewhere. This would make this the most comprehensive video storage and display system we have ever done.

To make this happen we would need:

1 -- To develop the streaming system by writing and adapting code

2 -- To develop a recruitment, orientation and training system to develop video teams in strategic locations

3 -- To organize and spread the word about the archiving system

4 -- To develop and place a team of producers/managers to make the decisions about the site and content.
