How Can I Share, Calendars and Contacts documents?

May First members have access to our shared Nextcloud server at

Through, you can:

  • Share files with your co-workers or friends via a folder on your computer or android or iphone. Easy to use! Just copy the file to the folder and it is automatically shared with everyone who you have provided access to that folder.
  • Collaboratively edit files using a web browser - word processing documents, spread sheet and even presentations - that are automatically saved as LibreOffice documents.
  • Store up to 5GB (ask us for more space if you need it)
  • Synchronize/backup/share your contacts and calendar to a trusted server (no need to send your contact list to Google)

How do I get started?

Anyone with a user account with May First can use that login and password to access Nextcloud *provided the login is enabled to use Nextcloud in the control panel*.

  • I already have a login and want to use it for Nextcloud
    • Login to the control panel with a username that has full access to your hosting order or membership
    • Locate the hosting order with the username you want to enable access for
    • Click the Nextcloud tab
    • Click button to add a new record.
  • I want to setup a new login for Nextcloud
    • Login to the members control panel and create a new user account
    • Follow the instructions above to enable Nextcloud access

How do I access Nextcloud via a web browser?

You can get started right away by going to and entering your May First username (you can use any valid username - your email login, SFTP login, control panel login, etc).

Sharing with other users

Sharing files and folders

You can share a folder or file with other users by cicking on the share icon next to the file or folder.

You can either share the file with a user that already has a login on the server by typing their username in the field that says "Name, federated cloud id or email address":

Or you can click the plus sign next to the "Share link" label to generate a random web address that anyone can use to access a file without a login:

By default, the link will be read-only and will expire in two weeks.

After you have shared a file and folder, how do you send the link?

Don't copy and paste the address in your browser. That seems to be the most sensible way to share a link but it won't work.

If you shared the file or folder with a user in the system, click the icon labeled "Internal Link".

If you shared the file or folder with an anymous user, then click the icon labelled "share link".

Sharing calendars

You can also share a calendar. Click on the share calendar icon , this is the first icon to the right of your calendar's name.

Type the full username of the user you want to share with. Matching names will appear in a list below the field. MFPL users must have logged in to at least once before they will appear in the list. Click on the name in the list that matches.

You can edit additional options allowing or restricting that user's ability to share this calendar with others, edit the calendar as well as create, delete or update calendar items.

Repeat this process for each user with whom you would like to share this calendar. The new calendar will appear within their account.

See below for how to share with groups of people.

Creating a form to collect data

Nextcloud can also help you create a form - such as a questionaire or sign up sheet. You can send everyone a link to fill it out. Then, you can download the responses into a spreadsheet.

To get started, click the Form link at the top of the page.

Then, you can start creating questions.

When you are done, copy the public link and send it to the world.

How do I synchronize with my desktop computer?

Synchronizing files

First, download the Nextcloud program for your operating system:

You will be prompted to pick a folder on your own computer to store your files.

Then, you will be prompted to enter the server address for your Nextcloud installation, which is:

Then you will need to enter your username and password. That's it!

Synchronizing your calendar and contacts

The most well-tested application for syncing with your Contacts and Calendar in your desktop is the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. (With the latest version 78 release, the calendar app is now part of Thunderbird - there is no need to install the separate lightning extension.)

To start sync'ing with Thunderbird, you will need to install two extensions:

  • Tbsync - the general purpose synchronizing program
  • Dav 4 Tbsync - the specific add-on for synchronizing using the DAV protocol that Nextcloud supports

Once they are both enable:

  • Click Tools -> Add-on Options -> Tbsync
  • Click Account Options -> Add new account -> Caldav and Carddav
  • Enter your username, password and the server address:
  • Follow the prompts to choose what you want to synchronize

How do I synchronize with my mobile phone?

Synchronizing Files

You can download either the android app or the iPhone app. You'll be asked the same questions as the ones above.

What about synchronizing my contacts and calendar?

On Android, install the DAVx⁵ (formerly known as DAVDroid) app (it seems to be available in both Google Play and f-droid).

If you have already installed the Nextcloud app, DAVx⁵ can be configured right from inside it.

  1. Open the Nextcloud app
  2. Open the left menu
  3. Choose settings
  4. Select sync calendar & contacts.
  5. Follow the steps (only user/pass is needed, the same you used before).

If you don't have the Nextcloud app installed, you will need to create an account from within DAVx⁵. You can simply enter the URL: and DAVx5 will prompt your to sync either contacts, calendar or both.

How do I synchronize with my web site?

May First/People Link's servers have the nextcloudcmd program installed which allows you to synchronize files on our servers to your Nextcloud account.

  • First, create a file in your user's home directory called .netrc
  • Make sure it is only readable by you:
    chmod 600 ~/.netrc
  • Add the following information to the file, replace <your-user-name> and <your-password> with your actual username and password.
    login <your-user-name>
    password <your-password>
  • Create a scheduled job in the control panel with the following command:
    nextcloudcmd --silent -n $HOME/ownCloud > /dev/null

Can I create groups of people to share with?

Yes you can! You can use our next feature called "circles."

First, create user accounts for all of your users.

  • Login to the Members Control Panel and create a user account for each person you will be sharing with.
  • You can send them a password reset email (click "Password Reset") in the left hand side bar.
  • Be sure everyone logs into at You cannot share a folder or calendar with someone who has not yet logged in.

Now organize your shares

  • You can take the following steps as any user in your organization. However, we recommend creating a special user in the control panel (e.g. yourorg-nextcloud-admin). That way, if you leave the organization, there can be an easy and smooth transition to maintaing your shares and you don't have to worry about shares being deleted if you delete their account.
  • Login to Nextcloud and click the Circles application (the circle with three dots around it).
  • Create a new circle by filling in a name
  • Select the circle type. We recommend creating a "personal" circle. If you choose a closed circle, the people you add will need to confirm membership before they are added to the circle. If you choose secret circle, your circle will be hidden, but if someone knows the name, then they can add themselves without admin approval. For this reason we recommend against using secret circles.
  • Now create the folders and calendars you want to share. You can assign one or more circles to each share.
  • Any user can create folders and calendars and share them with your circles - however, if that user is ever removed from the control panel, then your shares will go with them. So, creating a dedicated user is a good idea.

General maintenance

  • Everytime a new user comes or goes, log in as the special user and add or remove them to the appropriate circles.
