    88Hello and welcome to the workshop.

    10 We are Jamie McClelland and Maritza Arrastia. We are representing the Internet activist membership organization May First/People Link.

    12 In this workshop there will be no panels and no presentations. Instead, working in small groups here, and, via an Internet connection, at the Brecht Forum in New York City, we are all going to build, democratically
    13 and collaboratively, a hemisphere-wide agenda for the Internet.

    1514=== Translation ===
    1615
    17 Translation is a critical aspect of this workshop. Communication amongpeoples who speak different languages is necessary for hemispheric collaboration. How do we achieve it? That's part of the challenge. During our
    18 preparation, we spent more time discussing how to manage the translation than anything else.

    1917
    20 Since we are writing a brief statement of goals, it is not enough tojust get the general idea. Furthermore, without understanding the context of the discussion, it is easy to lose important meaning in the translation.
     18Since we are writing a brief statement of goals, it is not enough to just get the general idea. Furthermore, without understanding the context of the discussion, it is easy to lose important meaning in the translation.
    2119
    2220For these reasons, we are not relying on outside translators. All translation will happen by participants, both here and in New York. All translation will be open for critique and change. In short, a translation, just like an original proposal, will be evaluated, discussed, and edited as the group sees fit.
    2321
    24 To help people who are monolingual, the web site contains a tool that will provide an automatic machine translation on request. Therefore, anytime you see text in a language you don't understand, you can request
    25 an imperfect translation. Similarly, if you are proposing a right, you can optionally post, along with the right, a machine translation as a courtesy to others who might not speak your language.

    2724And lastly, we have people who speak both English and Spanish, to varying degrees of expertise, in this room.

    3532=== Politics ===
    3633
    37 Some of us here and in New York are very technically skilled, and some of us are relatively new to computers and the Internet. However, we are all united in a goal of making a better world. And it is this goal, more than any technical skill or interest, that brings us together, not only here at this social forum, but on the Internet as well.

    3835
    3936At May First/People Link, when we study the Internet we don't see computers, wires, software, bits or bytes - instead we see a movement, over a billion strong, of people overcoming every conceivable obstacle to communicate, share, build and organize.
    4037
    41 This Internet movement has the ideas and politics of the left embedded within it - from open protocols and free software - to it's autonomous and decentralized nature. It also has all the tensions, struggles, and
    42 conflicts of any mass movement. And, like every other movement, it's future is undetermined.

    46 In this workshop we are going to pro-actively plan the Internet we all need. An Internet that has space for both the north and the south, rural and urban, technically skilled and unskilled.
     42In this workshop we are going to pro-actively plan ________________ that we all need.
    4743
    48 We are going to do that by collaboratively writing the 10 most important goals for the Internet in this hemisphere.
     44We are going to do that by collaboratively writing the 10 most important goals for the ___________________.
    4945
    50 We will working in small groups of 4 - 5 people. Here in Guatemala City,we will have a room of small groups. As we speak, a room at the Brecht Forum in New York is also counting off into small groups.

    5147
    52 Here, and in New York, each small group will have one person with a laptop computer who is in charge of communicating the group's ideas to all the other small groups by typing them into a shared web site.
     48Here, and there, each small group will have one person with a laptop computer who is in charge of communicating the group's ideas to all the other small groups by typing them into a shared web site.
    5349
    5450You will all be able to see, via the projector, what all the other groups are entering, as they enter it.
    5551
    56 Every group will have the ability to add an agenda item by clicking the Add agenda item link. However, once we have 10 agenda items listed, nobody will be able to add a new item. If there are important agenda items not listed, you will need to edit an item added by another group to reflect what you think is missing. Every group is free to edit any
    57 agenda item, regardless of who submitted it. There is no ownership of ideas in this workshop.
