Mexcla on the web

Mexcla? is May First/People Link's simultaneous interpretation conference call system.

You can join a conference via the web or by dialing a phone number.

Your conference organizer should invite you to the conference by presenting you with both a web link (for people to join via the web) as well as a conference number to use when dialing in by phone.

If you have a computer with an Internet connection and working audio, we suggest you connect via the web so you can use the text chat feature and also see who else is on the call. However, if you have technical difficulties you can always use the phone.

Using Mexcla via the web

To use Mexcla via the web, you must have a working computer microphone and speakers.

If you are using Mexcla for the first time, please visit your conference room before the conference starts to ensure that everything is working properly.

Your conference organizer should provide you with a link to click on to access your conference. It should look something like:

The "123" represents the conference room you are meeting in. Your conference organizer will pick a number for your conference that most likely will be different that "1123."

When you visit the page, you are presented with a box to fill in your name and a button that says "Connect." The name you choose will be used to identify you to the other callers.

When you click the Connect button your browser will ask you to share your microphone. You should agree to share it (if you are using the Chrome browser, you will only be asked to share the microphone the first time you visit the page).

Now you should be in the conference call. You should hear an announcement of the conference room number you are in and, possibly "You are the only person in call" or something to that effect.

Switching Languages Via the Web

Suppose the phone call is in both English and Spanish.

By default, all conference participants have "Hear original language" selected. That means you hear everyone in the language they are speaking. If you are bi-lingual, this is the place to stay - you don't need to press any buttons during the call.

If you are mono-lingual (for example, English only), you should remain here until you hear someone speaking Spanish. At that point, click the "Hear interpreation" button to hear the interpreter translating the speaker's words into English. At a certain point, the Spanish speaker will stop speaking and an English speaker will begin speaking. When that happens the interpreter will start speaking Spanish. When you hear the interpreter speaking Spanish, click "Hear original language" so you can hear the speaker in their original English language.

If you are the interpreter, click the "Provide interpretation" button. This button will allow you to hear all voices in the "Hear original languages" room but when you speak, only people in the "Hear interpretation" room will hear you.

Using Mexcla via a phone

You can access mexcla via a regular phone by dialing USA 1 402 772 0337 or MEXICO 52 55 85262875 and choose extension 6. You will then be asked to enter the conference number provided by your conference organizer.

Switching Languages Via the Web

Language switching works exactly the same via the phone, with:

  • Press the 0 key to "Hear original language"
  • Press the 1 key to "Hear interpretation"
  • Press the 2 key to "Provide interpretation"
