How do I setup Outlook to access my May First/People Link account?

NOTE: March 28, 2007: Old versions of Outlook have a bug that prevent you from properly sending secure email. We strongly encourage you to use the free email program Thunderbird instead of Microsoft Outlook because we believe in supporting community-based free software projects rather than corporate based software projects like Outlook. However, if you have to use Outlook, you will need to download the most recent Outlook updates that fix the bug before you will be able to properly configure Outlook to send email securely. You can update Outlook here - please click the Check for Updates link.

First you need to set up a new account. Click on Tools and choose Email Accounts from the dropdown. Choose "Add a new email account". Then you need to decide whether you want a POP account or an IMAP account. In most cases, we recommend POP, but if you plan to use webmail frequently or will use multiple accounts to check your email, you may want to use IMAP. NOTE: This tutorial assumes you have chosen IMAP. Once you choose and click next, you get you this screen:

Enter your own information for Name, Email Address, User name and Password. Your incoming mail server and outgoing mail server will be either chavez.mayfirst.org or viewsic.mayfirst.org, depending on which server your account resides. Next, you click on "More settings".

Click on the "Outgoing Server" tab and click on "Use the same settings..." Finally, click on the "Advanced" tab.

NOTE: if you are using POP, please use port 995 instead of 993. Both incoming and outgoing require SSL, so make sure those boxes are checked. Also change the port for the outgoing server to 587. Click OK and click click Next and click Finish.
