I have too many messages in my inbox which is making my webmail experience very slow and frustrating - how can I re-gain control over my mail?

If you have more than 3,000 messages in your inbox, you will experience painful slowdowns when trying to access your inbox via webmail. By keeping your inbox under 1,000 messages you will both have a faster webmail experience and you will be helping to keep the server load to a minimum, making everyone's experience better.

Here are some tips to help keep your inbox under control:

  • If you are getting messages in your inbox marked with *SPAM* in the subject line, please filter them into a different directory. That step alone will make a huge difference in keeping things under control
  • Consider opening a ticket requesting that we break your inbox into smaller mailboxes - that will make it easier for you to sort through the messages and delete the ones you don't want. If the person running your membership has given you access to the server, then you can secure shell into your account and run the split-mailbox command yourself. Simply type the following command and you will be able to automatically move all of your inbox messages into multiple smaller mailboxes:
    split-mailbox

  • Consider setting up additional filters in webmail. You can create filters by clicking on the Options -> Filters.
