[[PageOutline]] = Workplan = ''' NOTE: This is a work in progress ''' The interactions between the mentors and the mentees forms the core of the project. The mentors and mentees will have four quarterly face-to-face sessions lasting 1 and a half days each. In addition, mentees are expected to spend 20 - 30 hours per month on projects developed during the course of the project. And mentors are expected to devote 15 - 20 hours per month providing supporting and feedback to both assigned mentees via email, online chat, and telephone. For the pilot project, we will recruit six mentees who will be mentored by two established techies. In addition, we will recruit additional trainers for the four face-to-face sessions. The face-to-face meetings will last one and half days, with the exception of the first meeting (in Detroit in conjunction with the Allied Media Conference) will be held in New York City and will be scheduled during the work-week. We will house travellers via solidarity housing. All meals will be provided as will the cost of transportation. == Reference Material == * Chuck Easttom, Essential Linux Administration: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners 2011. * Paul Cobbaut, Linux Fun 2011. == First Quarter == === Face-to-Face meeting === ''June 26 & 27, 2012 (at the Allied Media Conference, Detroit)'' '''Topic: Getting started / Establishing Communications Protocol''' Pre-meeting reading materials and preparation * All mentees will be provided with a netbook at the first face-to-face meeting to be used for the project that will be used throughout the year as their "Trusted Physical Console" * [http://cmrg.fifthhorseman.net/wiki/TrustedPhysicalConsole Trusted Physical Console] * Intro to Debian: * [http://www.debian.org/intro/about About Debian] * [http://www.debian.org/social_contract Social Contract] * [http://www.debian.org/intro/free Free Software] * [http://ubuntu-manual.org/] ==== Agenda ==== '''June 26''' * 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm Introductions * 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm Presentation and Discussion: Purpose of this Training -- Alfredo * Why we are here * How this will work/ how should this work? * Blogging * 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm Installing Debian (whezy) on netbooks (prepare prop to explain disk partitioning and do these presentations as the install proceeds) * Overview and discussion of netbooks * TPC computing or how we use and secure our local machines. * Why we use Debian (and will be starting folks off there as well). * Install methods (review USB and network install - we will use USB install) * 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm Reflections/feedback on day '''June 27''' * 9:00 am - 10:00 am Discharge Sessions: Technology, emotions, racism; creating an environment for addressing conflict -- Alfredo * 10:00 am - 12:30 pm Mentee groups work with mentors to make new laptop functional (configuring email, using IRC, etc) * 12:30 pm - 1:30 am Lunch * 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm.
