Additional Domain for the LSNTAP email lists?

Description

We at LSNTAP would like to make available another domain name for our email lists. This new one would be "ohiolegalservices.org", so one example would be test@…. Can this be done, and what does Mayfirst need from our end? Thanks!

You can do it, James, if you feel confident in working on your dns records.

First off, I'm assuming that this domain is pointing to us, right? If not, we have a whole other universe of stuff to do but, for now, let's assume it is.

Go to your main dns record (lsntap.org)

add an NS record for this domain mapped to a.ns.mayfirst.org and another mapped to b.ns.mayfirst.org (more or less what you have for all your other ns records).

Then just do an MX record for the url

lists.ohiolegalservices.org

mapped to

leslie.mayfirst.org

And then save all that and go to the create email list in the drop-down and create your new list.

If this is too heavy right now, just respond and we'll do this for you. But it's always a good idea to try. :-) You can't really break anything we can't fix.

Hi James - I wanted to additionally point out that Alfredo suggested creating the domain: lists.ohiolegalservices.org - whereas your original post requested simply ohiolegalservices.org. Alfredo's modification is an important one so I didn't want it to get overlooked. By using an explicit domain for your email list traffic that is different from normal email you will have a lot more flexibility with how you setup your regular email.

DNS is fun :-). I'll give it a crack and update you if I have any problems. Thanks for your help.

So in setting up the DNS, I learned two things. I think this falls under the category where the domain is pointing somewhere else. :-)

1.) There are no current mx records for ohiolegalservices.org or lists.ohiolegalservices.org. Currently, email is setup on other domains.

2.) Unfortunately, for ohiolegalservices there are NS records being pointed at another server.

In this case, would it be better to just use lists.ohiolegalservices.org, even though the organization still wants to use ohiolegalservices? And since your initial point about the domain applies, are there any other considerations? Thanks!

Hi James,

I'm going to try to restate what I think is going on. Let me know if I'm getting it wrong.

The main goal is that ohiolegalservices wants to create May First/People Link lists using the email address list-name@ohiolegalservices.org.

The first problem (as you indicate in your last message) is that the domain ohiolegalservices.org is not controlled by our domain name servers. When I run the dig command, it shows that ohiolegalservices domain name is being handled by register.com:

0 jamie@liberace:~$ dig +short -t ns ohiolegalservices.org
dns249.d.register.com.
dns175.b.register.com.
dns074.a.register.com.
dns244.c.register.com.
0 jamie@liberace:~$

This is a technical problem that could certainly be worked around, but it raises another problem: ohiolegalservices.org is not a member of May First/People Link.

Since LSNTAP is a member of May First/People Link you are entitled to use the organization's resources in whatever ways you want. However, we only ask questions when one organization seems to be using their membership to provide MFPL resources to another organization that is not a member.

There are always exceptions and extenuating circumstances and maybe this is one of them! But I wanted to raise this issue to ask the question: Is this a list being used for LSNTAP or for ohiolegalservices.org? And if it is for ohiolegalservices.org, should we ask them to join?

Thanks James!

Aloha Jamie

Interesting. Yeah, it does look like the better alternative is just having Ohio Legal Aid join Mayfirst. I'll pass the word onto them. Thanks again for your assistance.

Jamie,

Sorry for the misunderstanding on this. I was under the impression that NTAP had worked out this "subsidiary" list approach with you in advance. I hope you don't think we were trying to pull one over on Mayfirst.

We were actually looking at setting up a model where NTAP would sort of act as the intermediary for legal aid providers for email lists hosted via our account on Mayfirst. Besides your push back on this we had come to the conclusion that we don't really have the resources to support that model. So we will be directing interested parties to Mayfirst directly. I think that is a better approach for all concerned.

However, this kind of leaves Ohio Legal Services in limbo. They are prepared join Mayfirst but have a couple of questions about private list RSS feeds. Do you have any time for a short call with them tomorrow - friday? Once we get their questions answered and they join Mayfirst we'll be happy to show them how to get their lists set-up.

NO. We didn't think for a split second anybody was trying to play us...least of all, NTAP and you, for goodness sakes! Our policy on this issue is flexible but that gives it a complexity and a "work in progress" character that means we are always discussing it with members. NTAP's a member and Jamie was only reviewing this and discussing it with you. Basically, we just wanted you to tell us if this *was* an extenuating circumstance or what...in order, discuss the issue. :-)

Well...we'd love to welcome Ohio into the family. Thing is Jamie's traveling and I'm holding down the fort after having travelled myself last weekend and, lamentably, I don't know that much about rss feeds and private lists!

So either Jamie can make the call from where he is (beyond the call of duty but he's frequently doing that if possible) or maybe Daniel (dkg) can handle a quick call. I mean I'd love to do it but I'm not gonna be much help I don't think. Or early next week, Steve?

Sorry...but it's a kind of strange time for us here in terms of travel. :(

Let me hike the priority on this one anyway.

Jamie, no need for you to interrupt your travel. "Ohio" is busy next week so let's try to get Jamie on a call week after next. Here are some dates Jamie, why don't you suggest some times you are available:

5/20 5/21 5/22 5/23

Ok - sounds good. Tuesday and thursday are the best days for me. Mornings, around 10:00 am Americas/New_York would be ideal - would that work for you?

I'm assuming from the lack of followup that this eventually got resolved. It will auto-close in 2 weeks, unless someone responds to it.
