RFC: Drupal vs WordPress - Pro/Con Considerations

Reported by: HistoriCUSS Owned by: Dana

When planning a new site, I understand there are a couple primary options for website content control, being Drupal and WordPress

I have searched this site for references and it seems clear Drupal is the support groups preference, while WordPress is tolerated.

Considering WordPress is the self-proclaimed "largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world." which would seem to indicate a high level of user familiarity, I thought is might help to explain whatever considerations there are in choosing between Drupal and WordPress.

In researching this, I have created several wiki pages that could use some specific content as it relates to the needs of MF/PL members.

WordPress already had a wiki page

I created one for Drupal, another for CMS in general, as well as a stub for Joomla then the beginnings of a wiki page to compare Drupal with WordPress

I don't know all the considerations and concerns as I have little experience with creating website content, so defer to SMO team for edification and documentation.

Hi historicuss,

Thanks for the ticket & the details. It's always good to provide comparisons for folks to make informed decisions. I think it's best to do that with some neutrality, even though as individuals we each have our own preferred CMS. It would be good for a few people to add their notes and resources in this regard. It seems like it would would be good to review at our next F2F too.

Do you know anyone or groups that would be interested in helping improve documentation like this?

I wanted to reference the notes here seem more like How To's to me than FAQs. We have started a page for CMS's here:, which is linked to from the How To's menu or this page:

FAQs are more for the types of questions that come from tickets frequently and the How Tos are for information that we want to learn more about something, so our own curiosity to learn more about a CMS or software program.
