Roundcube new email SMTP 535 Authentication Error

Reported by: https://id.mayfirst.org/mahood Owned by: https://id.mayfirst.org/ross
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: roundcube smtp Cc:
Sensitive: no

Description

Hey all,

I set up a new email address under cyberunions and when trying to send an email from the roundcube interface it immediately gives

SMTP error 535 IMAP authentication error

this occurs apparently after the email address is created but resolves itself after about 10 minutes.

I am not sure what is causing the error, but it is specifically on sending otherwise emails are received by the new account

Hey Stephen,

It's kind of important, even for you, to give detailed information, like what the email user name is and/or the email address itself, otherwise it's just a guessing game to even determine if we're debugging the correct account.

ross,

My hunch is it occurs with the creation of a new email address, but the user was

lindsey

on the rose.mayfirst.org server

however the problem was short lived i was trying to debug it and then before i knew it she no longer received the error. But the error was specific to roundcube as i had her send a message from webmail and it did not give that error at all, it sent the message. We then went back to roundcube and received the error again. I did not quote the error cause when we went back to send a 3rd time in that case so i could get the exact error for documentation, it did not appear again.

Mmm...I don't think I know enough about our roundcube structure to make a definitive interpretation of this symptom. However, if I were to guess what's going on, I'd guess that there is some sort of cron mechanism that has yet to fire when the account initially gets created.

I did find evidence of the failed authentication on stallman:

0 stallman:/var/log/roundcube# grep lindsey errors
[01-Aug-2013 16:25:50 -0400]: IMAP Error: Login failed for lindsey from 187.163.88.61. LOGIN: failed: Re-Authentication Failure in /srv/roundcube/program/lib/Roundcube/rcube_imap.php on line 184 (POST /?_task=login&_action=login)
[01-Aug-2013 16:26:53 -0400]: IMAP Error: Login failed for lindsey from 187.163.88.61. LOGIN: failed: Re-Authentication Failure in /srv/roundcube/program/lib/Roundcube/rcube_imap.php on line 184 (POST /?_task=login&_action=login)
0 stallman:/var/log/roundcube#

I bet Steve or dkg could shed some light on the trail of account generation between horde and roundcube, which would probably explain the delay.

This is normal behavior. User accounts are synchronized to mail.mayfirst.org every 10 minutes. In the control panel, in the email address tab, it says "Email address changes have a 10 minute delay before they go into effect." I realize it's easy to miss though!
