Moving SRLP to a dedicated MOSH

Description

I talked to Jamie about this and he described the technical process for migrating an existing member from a shared to dedicated MOSH, but we were going to walk through this together. Does anyone else know how this is done?

We first need to create a dedicated MOSH for them, perhaps at tomorrow's face-to-face.

i was under the impression that MOSHes were shared servers (i.e. that there was no such thing as a dedicated MOSH), but maybe i'm just using the term wrong. it sure would be nice if it was explicitly defined someplace :)

Yes, the term MOSH is a little confusing in cases like these. However, I think the notion of a dedicated MOSH refers to having the same architecture as a shared MOSH, specifically these dedicated MOSHes include the mosh.pp puppet manifest.

rivera.mayfirst.org

Named server after after Sylvia Rivera

rivera.mayfirst.org is mostly setup. Two things:

  • We don't need to purchase an SSL certificate for dedicated MOSH's, correct?
  • I'm waiting to setup the Apache user and group until the migration steps from shared to dedicated hosting are more clear, namely what they are.

I believe this is correct.

I suspect there are two approaches for this process:

  1. You can just create a new hosting order on the new server and migrate all of the data over to the new hosting order.
  1. The other option is the more complicated and requires removing users on servers and changing red table etc. This would be a jamie question/process.

Unfortunately, it's usually a good idea to do this. If you plan to host mail on this server, we will have certificate issues without a proper cert. Also, if you want to access a database via phpmyadmin, you'll want a cert in order to have a https connection.

We have a good and documented process for this!

It's on the transfer site between servers page.

I'd be happy to walk you through it - but it might need to wait until next thursday - is that ok?

DNS has been changed, hay updated to to remove the mail.mayfirst.org exception (#7178) and the final data copied to rivera. I've QA'd the site and everything seems to be working.

I'll leave this open until SRLP has a chance to review. Then I'll clean up the temporary hosting order.
