Manually setting up domain forwarding/redirect

Description

Hello,

We have our domains registered with Network Solutions and we would like to decommission one of our domains so that it forwards automatically to another one of our domains. Network Solutions charges $13/yr to set up this service. Is there a simple way to do this manually and bypass Network Solutions? I believe both of the domains currently point to servers a.mayfirst.org and b.mayfirst.org.

I'm a new website assistant and not the web designer for our project so I don't have much experience with this.

Thanks!

Hi corinaction,

If both of your domans are pointed to mf/pl servers, you can relatively easily redirect one domain to another. Since you did not tell me which domains, it's difficult for me to give you specifics. Let me know the details of what you're trying to do and I'll give you more helpful instructions.

Hi Ross,

Thanks for getting back to me. We would like to redirect culturesofresistancenetwork.org to culturesofresistance.org. I believe the ...network.org address, which we'd like to forward, is grouped under the site caipirinhafoundation.org, if that makes any sense.

Also: culturesofresistancenetwork.org is currently set up through Wordpress and I was wondering if there was any way we could still access the back end/admin panel of that after setting up domain forwarding. I assume, if not, that we could still access the files in the back end manually using SFTP?

Finally, on that note, I've been having some trouble logging into 2 of our 3 SFTP accounts with the usernames/passwords we have on record. Is there somewhere I can easily access/modify the SFTP account info through the MF/PL members panel, or can we communicate about this privately somehow? You can reach me through the email address cc'd.

Thanks!

Hi Colin,

This is a strange setup you have. I think the easiest way to handle this may be to change the dns entry of culturesofresistance.org and add a records for cultersofresistancenetwork.org under that hosting order here:

https://members.mayfirst.org/cp/index.php?area=hosting_order&hosting_order_id=1000274&service_id=9

Then you can simply follow this guide for your web configuration:

https://support.mayfirst.org/wiki/faq/domain/canonical-web-address

You'll have to modify the caipirinhafoundation.org hosting order and remove all references to culturesofresistancenetwork.org, except the mx record. I think this should get you what you want. That way you could still access the admin interface at caipirinha.mayfirst.org.

Finally, on that note, I've been having some trouble logging into 2 of our 3 SFTP accounts with the usernames/passwords we have on record. I'm not sure if this answers your question, but you should be able to reset user passwords from the control panel, under the Server Access tab:

https://members.mayfirst.org/cp/index.php?area=hosting_order&hosting_order_id=1000639&service_id=3

Obviously you'll want to be in the correct hosting order for the site you need sftp access to.

Let me know if you have further questions,

Hi Ross,

Thanks for your help with this last week. I ended up resolving this with our webmaster, who is much more knowledgeable about all this than I am.

All the best, Colin
