Hi ninetofive,

Can you clarify what you're trying to accomplish? Are you trying to build a new site using wordpress as your content management system? Where are you transferring the site from? How do you want the current site archived (i.e. do you want it archived on-line or just a backup for you to have?)?

Thanks for clarifying,

~/ross

The site has already been developed. We want to launch it on January 9, 2013, by making it public. But we were advised to make it live several days before either on Jan. 4 or Jan. 7. Also, I need to know how to archive all of content on our current website. Thank you.

I'd encourage you to checkout the member backup faq - that way you can be sure you have a complete backup of your currently live site before you do anything.

We also have a wiki on migrating from a dev to a live site. It includes a link to a WordPress plugin called backup and move that I think might be the easiest way to move your site (although I've never tried that plugin myself).

Let us know if that works for you or if you have any other questions.

I will ask our website designer to reach out to you. Please provide me with your contact information. Thanks

Hi - Please refer your web site designer to this ticket (https://support.mayfirst.org/ticket/6649) - that way the designer can get a full history of our conversation and can add a comment to it so we are all kept in the loop. This level of transparency both keeps us all on the same page and helps with accountability.

Thanks!

Jamie,

I am Ming, helping 9to5 with web design. MayFirst currently hosts 9to5 official website (http://www.9to5.org ). On Monday Jan. 7th, we are planning to push our new site live. The new site awaiting to be live has this url (http://wp.9to5.org/). Could you help with the switch? Also, once it is switched over, could we save the older website somewhere for archiving purpuse?--url does not matter. Let me know if you have any questions, I will try my best to provide you with answers. Thanks!

Ming

Hi Ming,

You can do all of these things. What is it that you need help with? The on comment:4 there are links to faqs that should help you accomplish what you need. If you're having specific problems, could you be specific about what you need help with and we'll do what we can to assist you.

thanks,

Ross,

Thanks for responding. I don't really want to migrate content from one site to another, but instead point the URL adequately--which seems to be the easier route. Anyway you can help/guide? Let me know. Thanks.

comment:12 Changed 6 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/ninetofive

Here are more details:

www.9to5.org is our live site done in Drupal. We have a new WP site (http://wp.9to5.org/) that needs to be live on Monday, Jan. 7th., replacing the current one--with the www.9to5.org url. We would like to be able to archive the Drupal site, the archive site could be named archive.9to5.org. Please let me know how to do this switch. Time is ticking. If needed, we could probably start the switch this coming Friday--I need some suggestions from you. Thanks.

We want to keep the same url - www.9to5.org. Hope this is possible.

But for the old archived site the url doesn't matter. We just want to have access to it for a least a year, but we don't want it visible to the public.

All of these things are possible, but I think we might have an easier time migrating content than trying to muck around with dns entries to make the switch. I can help you with these things if you want. As long as you freeze content creation on the drupal site, I can go ahead and back that one up and store it in a different location. Then we can have a place to host the new wordpress site.

Hi Susan and Ming,

I've cloned the drupal site to http://archive.9to5.org you should be able to login with your administrative login to the site and put it in maintenance mode. This will keep outside users from seeing the site. You can also add apache authentication to the site if you want, follow the instructions for this faq https://support.mayfirst.org/wiki/password_protect_directory

Let me know, if you want me to help move the wordpress site over as well,

Ross,

Thanks for backing up the Drupal site.

We'll be able to freeze content on the WP site (http://wp.9to5.org) not until Friday 4pm. Can you help with moving the WP site over after Friday 4pm. Hope this works for you. Keep me updated please--I will check my email regularly. We'd like to get the new site up and running by early Monday. Thanks again for your work, we greatly appreciate it.

When should I log in to old drupal site to put it in maintenance mode. And we are good to go with the switch over. I don't plan to make any more changes to the wordpress site.

comment:19 Changed 6 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/ross

Hi Ming,

Great, I should be able to get the site transferred in the next hour or so. You will not need to login to the old drupal site, just the new one at http://archive.9to5.org. Login there and put that site into maintenance mode. I'll begin moving the wordpress site in the next 15 minutes.

comment:20 Changed 6 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/ninetofive

Okay, it's offline in maintenance mode. Thank you.

Ross,

I am pretty sure you will get to this, but just in case...Is there anyway you could make sure internal links referring to wp.9to5.org are changed to www.9to5.org? Let us know. Thanks.

Ming

comment:22 Changed 6 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/ross

Hi Ming,

I'm not sure if I got all of the links. I'll check, but for now you have a fully functional wp site at http://9to5.org. I've disabled the wp.9to5.org site (but all of the data remains).

~/ross

comment:23 Changed 6 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/ninetofive

Ross,

This is great. I am checking and buy disabling wp.9to5.org, we get missing links and images--which makes sense. Do you have a tool that runs through the site and kills absolute link references?

Ming

comment:24 Changed 6 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/ross

Okay now I think I have set all of the links correctly.

Let me know if there are any problems,

Ross,

Can we keep wp.9to5.org as a test site for future use?

Ming

comment:28 Changed 6 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/ross

Hi Ming,

The site is still there. If you want to use it, you can login to the control panel https://members.mayfirst.org/cp and re-enable the wp.9to5.org site.
