#5493 closed Bug/Something is broken (fixed)

Stone seems to have only 1 CPU assigned

Reported by: Brandon Jardine Owned by: Ross
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: stone.mayfirst.org cpu Cc:
Sensitive: no

Description

I noticed that stone seemed to be a bit slower to respond than is typical, and that it had an elevated load average (of around 5). It didn't seem to be disk I/O or any particular process in top causing it, so I checked to see how many CPUs were enabled. The contents of /proc/cpuinfo seems to indicate that only one is, which doesn't really seem appropriate.

I agree with brandon, I think stone needs another cpu. I'm not sure how to go about adding it. I'd be happy to help with the process though. I'm assigning it to you dkg.

vilma (stone's host) has a pretty busy CPU in general, but there is a bit of idleness right now at least (i don't know when the peak of CPU usage is, perhaps we want to enable some munin graphs at some point see what kind of spikes vilma has to deal with):

130 vilma:~# vmstat 1 10

0 vilma:~#

And only one guest has more than one CPU assigned to it.

0 vilma:~# head -v /etc/sv/kvm/*/env/SMP
==> /etc/sv/kvm/boggs/env/SMP <==
2
0 vilma:~#

Anyway, i went ahead and marked stone to have 2 CPUs allocated:

0 vilma:~# echo 2 > /etc/sv/kvm/stone/env/SMP
0 vilma:~#

So the only thing that needs doing is a reboot of stone (probably should pull in the new kernel while doing so) to make this active.

Ross, i'm reassigning to you if you don't mind coordinating the stone reboot.
