Description

Hi - I just got a new Mac and although I thought that I had migrated the same email settings (checked and double-checked) from my old computer i am getting an authentication failure message when I attempt to send from that account. It would be helpful to get guidelines re. settings that I should be using.

Hi Louis,

Have you checked the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) available here? https://support.mayfirst.org/wiki/configure_email

Also note that there are instructions at the bottom specific to certain mail clients.

If you're still having trouble, please reply to your original ticket, and let us know what e-mail program you're using on the old and new computers, and confirm that your settings match those on the page listed above. If you could copy and paste the exact text of your authentication failure message, that would also be helpful.

If this DOES solve your problems, let us know that too!

Hi - I checked it out and I did in fact enter a new override smtp number than i had been using, but still no go. I am running entourage (which has some little differences in terminology, at least, from outlook), but perhaps an additional thing here is that I am using Leopard.

Hi Louis - Is there a reason you are using Entourage? Unless you have a compelling reason, I would strongly encourage you to use a free email program like Thunderbird (you can download thunderbird here).

We don't have help files for Entourage - and we don't have any experience with it. We don't own it and because it's proprietary and expensive we can't just buy it to help you figure this out - which is one of the reasons we support free software - so we can build communities of users around free tools, rather than corporate ones.

What do you think? If you really have to use Entourage, let us know and we'll figure it out with you. But I'd like to first check in because we'll have a much quicker time with a program like Thunderbird.

I want to use Entourage, had a bad experience with t-bird and don't want to try it again.

I'm interesting in knowing what your bad experience with T-bird is. Also - is there a reason you chose Entourage instead of the built-in Mac Email client?

From your original post, I think you are receiving email ok, you are just not sending it.

I found a random page with screen grabs of Entourage settings. From that page - on step 5 it seems to show the SMTP settings. From those settings:

  • SMTP service requires a secure connection (SSL) CHECKED
  • Override default SMTP port (CHECKED, set to 587)
  • SMTP Requires authentication (CHECKED)
  • Use same settings as receiving mail server (CHECKED)

If you have all of these settings, and it still doesn't work, you can try changing the Override default SMTP port from 587 to 465. The port 465 is deprecated for this use, however, Microsoft products often ignore Internet standards and do things there own way. For the time being, we still support this deprecated use though.

I can't remember the t-bird prob except that it was something to do with the way the address book worked. I do remember that migrating back had a lot of tricks to it. In any event, I really do not want to migrate to anything different right now as I cannot afford anything that may disrupt my work.

Right - i am having problems sending email.

I cannot get either of those ports to do it.

Previously, the port I used was 2525, that was with Entourage but running over pre-Tiger OS X and now I am using Leopard. I also was not checking the "use same settings" thing and was entering in username lhead with a generated password that you sent me.

At one point I remember you having me put in a domain name in "domain for unqualified addresses." at some later point I removed that.

What do you have as your smtp server? (see step 3 on the Entourage screen grab page).

It should be viewsic.mayfirst.org (it may be incorrectly set to chun.mayfirst.org).

Your old settings seem to be based on an older configuration we used to support. Switching your self to use viewsic.mayfirst.org (with the other settings I mention above) should do the trick. Let us know one way or another.
