#3995 new Bug/Something is broken

git:// should be removed/overhauled

Reported by: Daniel Kahn Gillmor Owned by: Jamie McClelland
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: puppet Cc:
Sensitive: no

The parts of git:// that are administrative tools should be moved into a new puppet submodule git repo at: git://

The parts of it that are mfpl-specific configuration should go into the main May First/People Link puppet module at git://

Change History (2)

I've taken a first crack at this. I've moved the obvious configuration items into our manifests directory. I've left several things in the mayfirst module that are arguably not MFPL configuration details but more generic.

I haven't started breaking out the pieces currently in the mayfirst puppet module into different modules because I'm not yet sure the best way to organize them. I think I'd like to continue using the mayfirst module to hold the bits and pieces that I'm not sure how else to organize until it's clearer how they might better live as independently maintained modules.

Suggestions welcome!

My only complaint about continuing to use the "mayfirst" module is that it's confusing to refer to it.

The mayfirst puppet configuration repository is at git://, which refers to git submodules to pull in certain puppet modules.

Then we also have the mayfirst puppet module repostiory at git://

These two names are way too easy to get mixed up. I strongly prefer non-ambiguous names. Talking about this stuff with other humans is complicated enough without having to think hard about how to refer to the pieces.

Please get rid of git:// soon, and replace it with something (or somethings) with succinct, unambiguous names.
