Thanks for the voicemail Chris. The outage was caused by another union's mis-configuration of their web site's ssl certificate, which brought the entire server down.

Thanks Jamie,

Is it possible to have a mirror site for situations like this. If so, how much would that cost?

Thanks

Chris

Sites don't cost money here, Chris. Everything is free.

If you want a "mirror" site, just go ahead and set one up. The only problem is that when you go to switch sites, you'll have to switch the dns settings for them and set a short time to live so the switch would occur quickly. You don't have your dns here so you have to do all that yourselves.

But if you want, do a hosting order request and we'll set up another site for you on another server. It's done a lot here.

ok,thanks. I'll look into it. By mirror site, does that mean (after it Is setup) I am always posting to both sites when I make a change, or just one and the mirror site reflects the first site.

And you still suggest we move the dns over to your site, right?

Summary: URGENT: Site is still down!uir

Hi Chris,

As Alfredo says - setting up additional hosting orders on different servers is not a problem. However, to truly "mirror" a database driven site across two different servers is not trivial and beyond what we can do for you (although if you have someone we'd be more than happy to support them in the task).

Alternatively - I would suggest a simpler approach of:

  • On your second site, have a prepared static web page indicating that the main site is down, with what ever info you want to provide.
  • On the second site, run a daily script that copies the live site as static html pages on the second site (as it appears to an anonymous user). Then, if the main site goes down, people will get a recent static version of the main site.

These two approaches are much simpler to both implement and maintain.

Both do, however, require the DNS changs Alfredo mentions. In other words, when the live site goes down, someone has to update your DNS records. In the past, this has taken days, so figuring out a quicker way to modify your DNS records would be a good first step. You don't have to move your DNS to our servers to do this, but that would be one way for you to have direct access to the records.
