Description

The building we just moved into has their own exchange server (its our fiscal sponsor org's building.) We need to have our email forwarded there. The ip address is 98.172.33.198 This would apply to all email that comes to vote-nola.org

Hi Rosanacruz,

Congrats on your move! I hope things are settling down.

We generally discourage our members from using proprietary software like Microsoft Exchange because it is expensive, it's private (the software is owned by a giant corporation), and it's run for profit. At May First/People Link, all the software we use is free and open source. The Free part not only means we don't pay for it, but more importantly, it means that there are no intellectual property rights that restrict what you can do with it. In other words, it belongs to the world, which is an important part of our work politically.

A good analogy are the genetically modified Monsanto seeds - which are sold to farmers for very little money and grow enormous bumper crops, but either don't produce seeds that can be re-used, or when they do produce seed, farmers are prohibited by their contract from actually using them. They are then forced to buy more seeds the next year. That approach sums up proprietary software, like Microsoft Exchange, in a nut shell.

Having said all of this ... another important political aspect of our work is that you have the power to make your technology decision - we don't control that.

So, if you do choose to switch to the Exchange Server, you can do that by following these steps:

  • Ensure that the Exchange server is properly configured to receive email from all the email addresses that you are using (you will need to communicate with your on site mail administrator about this)
  • Plan with your local mail administrator how and when to make the transition to ensure you will not have disrupted mail service. This process can be tricky.
  • Login to the Members Control Panel. You'll need to login with the username votenola. Let us know if you don't have access to the password.
  • Under the "Services" drop down menu, select DNS
  • Click the Edit link next to the record for mail.vote-nola.org.
  • Change the IP address from 209.234.253.187 to 98.172.33.198 and click Submit
  • Click the Edit link next to the record "mx vote-nola.org" and change june.mayfirst.org to mail.vote-nola.org.

Let us know if you have any problems or questions.
