Description

Hey, all - sorry about that panicked ticket earlier; the problems with latinainstitute.org weren't on MFPL's end at all. But we are facing a new problem.

As far as I understand it from Andres at Streeter Tech (CC'd on this ticket), the way the latinainstitute.org domain registration is set up, they are unable to simply point the domain name to the MFPL nameservers (a.ns.mayfirst.org and b.ns.mayfirst.org). Rather, in order to maintain control over the DNS records for the domain, they need to be able to point to the actual IP of the server on which the website is hosted (julia, 209.234.249.204). Is it possible for them to set up the latinainstitute.org DNS record on Network Solutions to point directly to 209.234.249.204?

Thanks so much for the help - they'd like to make the new site live ASAP so the sooner you can help, the better!

  • Summary changed from Can we bypass MFPL nameservers and direct Latina Institute traffic directly to julia? to dedicated IP needed for latinainstitute.org
  • Type changed from Question/How do I...? to Feature/Enhancement Request

OK, realizing now that in fact what we need is a new dedicated IP address set up for the Latina Institute. Can that be done? The sooner the better! Does that involve any changes to their current hosting plan or rate?

Hi Jack,

The Latina Institute is a dues paying member - so there's no reason why we'd need to change their rate. The only time we ask members to increase their dues is when they need something that costs the organization a significantly higher cost (like a dedicated server).

A dedicated IP is not a problem - but it's also not necessary for what you are describing.

You can simply point the DNS record to the shared IP address for julia.mayfirst.org (209.234.249.204) and it should just work. You can also test the change before modifying your DNS records.

The only reason to get a dedicated IP address is if you need a https/ssl secure connection. If that's the case - let me know and I can assign you a new IP today.

Hey, Jamie -

Ah - I think there was a lack of understanding there on my part, but thankfully you've cleared it up for me. I don't know how I've gone so long without understanding that using an a record you can use a shared IP address to point to a specific website. Thanks so much for the enlightenment, and for the quick responses as always.

Jack
