#2440 closed Bug/Something is broken (fixed)

Users can't post

Reported by: Rich Gardner Owned by: Jamie McClelland
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: phillyimc.org Cc:
Sensitive: no

Description

From a user: Cannot post ( I wanted to answer your article) ! I cannot see the "CAPTCHA" (code they require) for me to post! I used to post so easily before and for a couple of months I cannot !

Doesn't affect me at all and a very few users can post, but we've gotten very few comment posts and a few complaints on this.

Hi rich2506,

Can you let us know what site you are referring to?

thanks,

Judging from an email - I think you are talking about philly IMC. Have you tried logging out of the site and then trying to post a comment? It's possible that it doesn't affect you because you are logged in.

Er, actually, I tried doing that so I could post the comment for Monique and when I tried to sign out, I got the kind of page that comes up when you're still within the site, but you've asked for a nonexistent page. I did however, in the past, been kicked off the site just because I had been logged in for so long and had no trouble getting the number captcha to get back in. There doesn't appear to be any problem with posting articles, it's just comments that people have trouble posting.

I don't have a login for the site, so I'm doing this anonymously. I notice that when I go to this page:

http://phillyimc.org/en/senator-edward-moore-ted-kennedy

The comment captcha claims to be an image captcha but the image is not visible. The underlying HTML code does indeed include a img src tag - but that image just doesn't seem to have been properly created.

When I go to the login, on the other hand:

http://phillyimc.org/user

I see a math captcha which displays properly.

My guess is that captcha for logins is configured to use "math" whereas captcha for comments is configured to use "image" and image captchas are broken for some reason.

If you have admin access to the site - perhaps you could try noodling around the captcha settings to see if you switch comment captchas to use math instead of image?

Okay, I looked at the options available to me and the "edit" options are: "content," "comments," "users," "your profile," "aggregator," & "categories." I looked at "comment: settings" and it doesn't have anything that refers to the captcha. Doesn't appear that I have the necessary access. BTW, my buddy wrote again: "I should have thought about it! On the Home page, you can create a new account and this is what I did! Went to your article, pretended to respond and voila I do not have to see any pic or anything else to comfirm!

Hi MO"

Glad the user figure out how to get an account :).

If you have access to configure captcha - you should see it listed on this page:

http://phillyimc.org/admin

If it's not there - then whoever does have access to the drupal site should prolly grant you the privileges!

It sounds like only people who do not have an account encounter this problem, but if you do have an account it is not an issue. still, i think it would be good to fix for the general user.

i agree... i talked with dave and he said, it was possibly an issue with the image cache-- which is a "php image manipulation thing" (direct quote!)... he showed me the info on drupal captchas: http://drupal.org/project/captcha

on the question of admin access, right now the following users have admin access: steve, aaron, davez, and admin -- so rich doesn't have this access and neither do i.

Hi Amy,

Thanks for the response. Maybe you could point one of the people with admin access to this thread - I think they should be able to resolve the issue by disabling the image captcha to force the use of math captcha (probably the easiest fix) or try to debug what's wrong with image captcha).

Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help.

Resolution: fixed
Status: newclosed

i was just able to post a comment anonymously here: http://phillyimc.org/en/senator-edward-moore-ted-kennedy#comment-69078

so i think this issue is resolved.
