Description

A error message keeps popping up that emails from our Protonmail accounts can't be sent out to the mailing list even though there is no size limit and the attachment file size is relatively small (14 mb).

This is the message that is received:

We have forwarded this issue to Protonmail support but I believe it may be an issue of the listserv itself.

The listserv isn't functional at the moment and we'd like to send out urgent updates as soon as possible.

Hi,

So this message definitely related to May First and is coming from the underlying smtp server that handles sending e-mail for the Mailman mailing list software. On this server we have set a total message size limit of 20MB including headers,body and all attachments of an e-mail.

We've implemented this limit for well though out reasons to ensure the stability of our mailing list infrastructure.

The workflow we suggest/prefer is to upload large files to your website or our Nextcloud service at https://share.mayfirst.org , create a share link for the file, and send the link to your e-mail list.

I know that means an extra step, but it is also a much more efficient use of resources as recipients can download the file as needed. Enclosed e-mail attachments immediately begin to take up disk extra disk storage, cycles, and energy as they are reproduced across the mail servers of all recipients, often multiplying even more when there are bounces or failed deliveries for any reason.
