#16521 closed Bug/Something is broken (fixed)

jabber/xmpp spammers

Reported by: Jamie McClelland Owned by:
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: jabber xmpp Cc:
Sensitive: no

In the last 24 hour or so I've received about 6 requests from users I don't know wanting to contact me via my xmpp/jabber account. I've rejected and blocked all of them.

They all seem to be from:

I'm investigating ways to block that server entirely.

It seems that mod_privacy_lists (formerly known as mod_privacy), optionally with mod_blocking, is the old way to do it, and mod_blocklist is the new way. But I can't tell if mod_blocklist allows us to block and entire domain at the server level or whether it just blocks individual users. Alternatively, mod_firewall seems sure to work, but is more complicated.

It looks like mod_firewall comes with the debian package prosody-modules (which we already have installed) and they have a sample firewall script that blocks known spammer servers which already contains the server, so this seems like the right way to go.
