#161 closed Bug/Something is broken (fixed)

blogsmf.mayfirst.org "once you're logged in" block has extraneous text

Reported by: Daniel Kahn Gillmor Owned by: Amanda
Priority: Medium Component: Outreach

Sensitive: no

Description

The convenient helper block titled "Once You're Logged In..." on blogsmf.mayfirst.org has a couple of usability problems:

  • it probably shouldn't actually provide links to people who aren't logged in -- those people will just get an "access denied" message if they click on them -- maybe it should be a different box entirely for non-authenticated users?
  • The text for the links are way too long. There are many good arguments about why the term "click here" is a bad idea for the web in general. And in general, the less text we show to users, the more likely that they'll take the time to read it.

Okay, I'll fix the visibility issue tonight. "Click here" is dumb, no doubt about it.

Visible now only to authenticated and administrators. Visitors can't see this block. Words in the box now reduced. I'll close ticket but can be reopened if we want to change words.

Looks good, Alfredo. A couple more thoughts on the phrasing:

  • none of the other links on the page have periods in them. Why do these?
  • is a user posting a blog, or is it a blog entry? Does "post to your blog" make more sense than "post a blog entry"? what about "Add to your blog"?
  • The top navigation bar says "Events Calendar", but the left-hand link calls it the "Event Calendar". But does "Post to" really say what we want anyway? What about "Publish an event on the calendar" or something like that?

I guess my general goals here are threefold:

  • minimize total navigation/admin text on the site
  • make what text remains aesthetically consistent with itself
  • replace technical/backend terms (like "post" or "node" or "click") with terms more directly related to what people want to do.

Done, I think so anyway but I'll leave it open until everyone's cool with it.

Looks good to me, except for that last trailing dot on "Publish an event on the Calendar." Thanks for taking these concerns seriously. Sorry if they feel like picking nits.

With the calendar modules disabled, for now, I've removed that option from this block. The block seemed a bit dumb -- a title and then a link that says the same thing. So I put a little image in there.

Thanks for cleaning that up, Alfredo. I'm not sure i like the "Click on the image to post to your blog" text. The fact that it's a link should be visible by its form (it shows up in blue to me). Do we even need that block? the menu block on the left contains a "My Blog" link, and if you click that, at the top of the page it shows "post new blog entry".

If we want to keep that "once you're logged in" block, is it possible to remove the title entirely, so that it's just a nice clean link in the sidebar?

Alternately, if we just want to add a single link, could it be added it as a navigation item (along the top of the page) only for authenticated users?

Hi Alfredo - thanks for going through the open tickets and figuring out what can be closed etc.

On this ticket - what do you think about dkg's last comment?

Personally I don't think it's a show stopper in terms of needing to be fixed before we go live, but I think we should either explicitly decide to keep the "Click on the image to post to your blog" text or leave the ticket open to be figured out later.

I think it's a good idea to provide an extra link for people to post to their blog - a one click link will make a big difference for people not used to blogging. And I think adding graphics makes the site look a lot better.

I agree with Daniel - that we could remove the title of the block. I just found an open source icons library. Site seems to be down right now - but they may have icons that better represent posting to the blog. Then - the icon could be a link and the text underneath could simply be an additional link with: "Post to my blog" as the text.

I still don't think this is a show stopper, but I do think it's an open ticket. I think the "Click on the image" text and image is a little clunky. I think if it just said, with text, "Post to your blog" it would look cleaner.

only because I've been looking for something external to point my boss to (click here to find out why it is really bad that you insist on saying "click here")
