Description

Hi! We're in the process of switching over our website to a new one built on Rails and I was curious if you had any pointers/resources for setting up a rails app on Mayfirst (or is it even possible?). I saw https://support.mayfirst.org/wiki/boggs had some custom Apache config but that seemed to be running maybe on its own server?

Actually this turns out to be not necessary for our purposes, but wondering if y'all might still have advice in case it comes up later for someone else searching tickets? No rush though!

Our shared servers are set up to run php applications or regular html sites without any extra fuss but doing anything else requires some workarounds.

If you can install rails locally under your website user and configure rails to listen on a port for localhost then you should be able to configure apache through the advanced settings in the MF control panel to forward requests to that port on localhost. Assuming your rails app also uses the mysql database you can create a database and database user through the control panel and configure the rails app with those details. I'm not sure if we've done this specifically for a rails app but other members have managed to this for similar setups.

Another alternative is asking for your own virtual private server.

We are looking for an easier way to do this as part of our new infrastructure overhaul.
