#15111 assigned Question/How do I...?

Single User Multiple Websites

Description

Dear MF/PL,

I am reaching out on behalf of Science for the People. We have setup a number of websites (in the process of transferring our digital infrastructure). It took us a moment to understand that with the creation of a website we automatically create a new user account. And here comes the question: when trying to reuse an already setup user for a new website it doesn't allow to do so. We assume that is intentional? If so: is this particular design due to security concerns or different, more technical, reasons? Well, our actual question is whether there is some way to have multiple sites administrated by the same user account or simply not.

Thanks for the info! David

Hi David, you can give a user hosting order access to multiple hosting orders so that the same user has access to the control panel for each hosting order, however for security purposes and also because new hosting orders are not necessarily created on the same server the user that the site process runs as and actually owns the files should be unique for every hosting order.

If you want to have a common access via sftp/ssh to the files of all of these sites consider using the same ssh key and adding it to each user in the server access tab for each hosting order.

Let me know if you need additional details about the above.
