#14750 assigned Question/How do I...?

Receiving / accepting calendar event invitations

Reported by: Benjamin Melançon Owned by: JaimeV
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: events Calendar Cc: chris@…, clayton@…, Jamie McClelland
Sensitive: no

Description

Both Clayton and i did not receive calendar invitations sent by someone using Microsoft Exchange. I believe i have in the past. I was able to send an event invitation through Thunderbird and the Exchange-users were able to accept, and i could see that they accepted.

This is basically a support request because i don't feel i know anything about calendars and invites but could find nothing in the support queue or wikis already.

Hi Benjamin. This is not something I've explored before. I don't have access to a Microsoft Exchange server to test emitting invites. If you do, maybe we can run a few tests together?

Hi Ben, Calendar invites are, essentially, email messages. So the first crack at this problem is to find out why the calendar invite didn't arrive. Either our servers rejected the message (unlikely but maybe the exchange server was doing something egregious in sending it - like sending it from an address with a domain that doesn't exist) OR our servers accepted the email but either our spam detection sent it to spam or your email program marked it as junk or otherwise filtered it in an unpredictable way.

If you can give us the approximate date/time that it was sent, the email addresses it was sent to and some info about the sender (likely domain name, etc) we could track down in our logs to try to see if the invite was in fact delivered to your account.

The second crack at this problem is whether your email client can do anything sensible with the calendar invite. I also use Thunderbird and I have the lightning extension so Thunderbird gives me the button to accept it or decline it and will automatically add it to the calendar. I can see how Thunderbird or any email client could choke on this step for a million reasons, including something as obscure as a different version of Exchange sending the email in a slightly different format than Thunderbird expects.

Hope this helps!

Thank you!

Yes, when i do receive invites Thunderbird and integration with May First's NextCloud calendars works wonderfully ("This message contains an invitation to an event" with options). I also get the notifications when people accept events i create.

Invitations that I have not received:

  • The Microsoft Exchange one with an address at acecreative.biz tried to send 2019-05-20 around 13:00 Eastern, to my .coop address. They said "kept getting an error from my Exchange server"
  • Another one from an unknown e-mail program from an address at greatergoodstrategy.com just now, 2019-05-21 around 21:55 Eastern, to my .com address.

Nevermind the latter one; it got intercepted by Google Calendar because it is evil and has decided that since i want to be able to *send* from my gmail account once a year from my real e-mail address, surely i want it to intercept all event invitations sent from Gmail. Ugh.

But the Exchange one yesterday is a real conundrum, if there's any indication on May First's side of the attempt i'd love to know.

Be right back; disasociating my address from Google's clutches.

But those seem to be regular email messages, not calendar invites.
