Description

Hi -- In the past week I've had two folks confirm that they sent emails to mayfirst.org hosted addresses and those emails have not showed up in my inbox. Any idea what might be happening? The two were

  1. cmccormick@… to info@… on January 8, 2019
  2. a rocket lawyer email to tim@…, sometime earlier this week

I see this one in the logs. The sending server attempted delivery once and was greylisted. Most e-mail servers will make multiple attempts and mail from a previously unknown server will be accepted on the 2nd try. This is a dance that most e-mail servers do automatically until they have some rapport with eachother. https://support.mayfirst.org/wiki/greylisting If their server gave up on delivering after the first try it should have informed the sender that their e-mail was not delivered. It seems their server did neither of the expected above.

I don't see any indication that e-mail was delivered to buffy.mayfirst.org

Glad to hear there's a clear reason and it's their fault! Hopefully it will just work next time... could y'all whitelist that server (sosnc.gov) for the time being, though?

  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from assigned to feedback

I've just added smtp.sosnc.gov to the postgrey whitelist configuration.

Aargh I just got off the phone with the NC Secretary of State and apparently anytime they try to send email to a Mayfirst address (or at least, I tried tim@… as well as tim@…) their system comes back saying "Bad email address" and they can't send. And apparently there's "nothing anyone can do about it" from their end.

Don't think there's anything we can do about it from this end either, but just thought I'd let y'all know that that's going on..

In the logs see the greylisting is still happening. I think I've configured the whitelist entry incorrectly. I've just adjusted it now and pushed to both chelsea and buffyy where stallmann.mayfirst.org is set.

Also I would encourage you to move away from using a mayfirst subdomains as an e-mail address. We may eventually have to discontinue using subdomains of mayfirst.org for members.
