It seems that the site is consistently maxing out the 2 available cpu's. This is unusual for a single php site. I would like to start by upgrading your dedicated server menchu to the latest verison of debian which includes a newer version of php that brings some performance improvements. There would be some downtime while I do this so I can schedule this for later if you prefer.

thank you how much downtime? can it be in the middle of the night on a weekend?

comment:3 Changed 2 weeks ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/jaimev

About 20-30 minutes I think. I would recommend doing it this evening.

thanks ok if there's no risk of losing the site for longer than that, please do as late at night as possible please let us know any changes we need to know to sftp info or anything else my colleague marc has set up a development site that i assume will also move or at least still work where it is THANKS

I just added myself to this ticket. Has this upgrade taken place yet?

Regarding the dev.worldbeyondwar.org site that David mentioned, I believe this will be unaffected by the upgrade. Please let me know if this is correct.

Thanks.

Hi , before going forward with the upgrade I'd like to ask you to go through all of your sites hosted on menchu and make sure that all of their software and plugins are up to date. Outdated plugins and cms like wordpress may have problems with the new verison of php and you can avoid this by making sure you have run all updates now.

dev.worldbeyondwar.org is also on menchu.

I just completed an upgrade of worldbeyondwar.org to bring all our software up to date on our main site. This is now fully up to date.

I don't know the status of other sites that might be on menchu, though.

not sure what all the sites are these i always keep the plugins up-to-date on but not the themes, because i don't want to screw up the modifications of the themes

Replying to https://id.mayfirst.org/dswanson:

I meant to list them: -- davidswanson.org -- warisacrime.org

Jaime, is it possible to move worldbeyondwar.org to a new server but leave davidswanson.org and warisacrime.org on menchu?

Or, can we move all 3 sites safely, since the plugins are up to date?

We use a child theme on worldbeyondwar.org to make theme updates easy. But since I don't think we use child themes on the other two sites, it may be a big problem to update these themes.

If this is not possible, i think we have to create child themes for the other 2 sites, which is not something we currently have a plan to do.

I'm adding some info which was shared via email. We really should use the ticketing system rather than email for this.

We need a complete inventory and update status of sites on menchu. The following sites are on menchu and are fully updated:

worldbeyondwar.org classroom.worldbeyondwar.org globalsecurity.worldbeyondwar.org

This site is not on menchu:

dev.worldbeyondwar.org

These sites are on menchu (we believe) and have updated plugins but not updated themes, since they do not use child themes and can't be easily updated:

davidswanson.org warisacrime.org adventuresofwes.org adventuresofoliver.org

The following site is not updated at all: old.warisacrime.org

If we all agree that this inventory is complete and correct, can I suggest that we move worldbeyondwar.org to a new site and leave all the others on menchu?

All of our servers will be upgraded to PHP 7 in the coming weeks so I don't see any use in moving some sites off of menchu and leaving others. Now that you've updated your main site I think we should go ahead with the upgrade on menchu. If any of your archival sites there present problems after the upgrade we can configure them to continue using PHP 5 for now but you should know that we will only support this until Dec 31st of this year. Security updates for PHP 5 are ending then so we will discontinue it on all of our servers.

I see 9 active sites on menchu. The primary ServerName is the first in the list with aliases listed on the same line.

OK -- I wish I'd known all these years that thousands of hours of work would be destroyed by mandatory improvements. old.WarIsACrime.org has been pretty well mangled already, and apparently I can't halt its final destruction. So, onward ...

comment:15 Changed 2 weeks ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/jaimev

You could look into converting the old.warisacrime.org site into a static html site. This will be the easiest way to keep the old site online if you still want it to be publicly accesible.

comment:16 Changed 2 weeks ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/dswanson

didn't we do that?

comment:17 Changed 2 weeks ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/marceliotstein

Yes, we did convert the old.warisacrime.org site into static HTML. I just checked it out and it looks all static to me. So this is good news.

I agree that we should go ahead with the upgrade and fix problems as they occur. Since the PHP 7 upgrade is going to happen soon anyway, it's inevitable that we will have to deal with whatever problems occur at some point, so we may as well start now.

I hope and expect that we will be able to fix any problems that come up, and won't have to lose anything.
