#1403 closed Bug/Something is broken (fixed)

Email size limit for lists

Reported by: https://id.mayfirst.org/olaf Owned by: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: email size limit Cc: cvaughn@…, jfortkamp@…
Sensitive: no

Description

Have set my list default to 0 for the following field: "Maximum length in kilobytes (KB) of a message body."

I am still getting emails kicked-back with the following message:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

childsupport@… on 9/23/2008 1:37 PM

This message is larger than the current system limit or the recipient's mailbox is full. Create a shorter message body or remove attachments and try sending it again. <mail.olaf.org #5.2.3 smtp;450 5.2.3 Msg Size greater than allowed by Remote Host>

Hi Olaf,

How big is the message in question?

Our email server has a limit of 2 MB per message which will supersede the mailman limit. Our 2 MB limit is in place to avoid accidentally sending a large attachment which would cause a huge performance hit on the server.

If your message is less than 2 MB let us know. If it's more than 2 MB, let us know the situation. Often there are good alternatives to sending a large attachment to a list (and, in fact, many people don't like or cannot receive attachments larger than 2 MB).

Thanks, Jamie.

Is it possible to have the limit set to at least 4 MB per message?

Our users tend to exchange attachments as part of the list?

Thanks, again.

After discussing with Alfredo, we decided to up the limit to 4 MB. This is a server-wide setting, so we will see how it goes and may reduce it if it causes problems for other list members.

Please let your users know that sending large attachments via email, especially to lists, is not recommended. You might consider setting up a web site that would allow users to upload documents and then email links to those documents instead (we'd be happy to help you get that off the ground).

There are certainly limitations to this approach as well (particularly related to privacy) - but whenever possible, we'd encourage your users to send links instead of large documents.

Very good. We appreciate the accommodation. In the meantime, we will promote posting content to our statewide legal services website. Again, thanks.
