Problems in posting to our mailman list - funny characters (= signs, etc.) are displayed in approval queue

When I sent an email message to our mailman list, extra characters are interpolated. At the end of every line, there is a =20, and also "D" appears within the URL for the news stories, when it should not be there. I can't edit the received emails for blasting out -- how can I send them without these extra characters apprearing?

Here is the message as it appears on Mailman, ready to be sent, with the interpolated characters:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Last week in his regular radio program, Mayor Bloomberg made an =20 important statement about our engineers at the MTA. He acknowledged =20 that they should be paid more. This is a welcome development in our =20 fight to obtain competitive salaries for our titles. The Mayor said, =20 If you want to have the best engineers to negotiate with the best =20 engineers in the construction company, you are going to have to pay =20 comparable salaries.

We have continued to advance the argument that professional and =20 technical civil servants are the best bargain for the City, because we =20 create a knowledge base which allows us to do work that otherwise =20 would be farmed out to more expensive consultants. Hi Alan,

I think you are noticing those characters in the Mailman approval queue web page, where the message to be approved appears in a text area box and you are asked to either approve it, deny it, reject it or defer it. Is that correct?

Those characters appear to be mime encoding characters. Since email can only be transmitted using a limited set of characters, many email programs "mime encode" characters not found in the limited set. These characters are translated back by most email programs. Mailman, however, does not translate them back when showing you the preview.

You can safely approve the message as is. Recipients will not see those characters. Please re-open the ticket if for some reason recipients are getting the mime characters.

The public appreciates the technical and professional City services they use every day ? but it doesn?t know much about the people providing the know-how that makes the City run. Last spring, Local 375 produced a campaign highlighting the work done by the members of the Civil Service Technical Guild on 1010 WINS, and we were rewarded with a lot of recognition. Just last week, the Mayor said that our Engineers should be paid more ? and many of his Commissioners agree that CSTG members deserve better wages.

Educating the public about our value takes time, but it pays off. So, this week, we are beginning another campaign on 1010 WINS, highlighting the work of our members. Every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week for six weeks, millions of New Yorkers will hear three 60 second radio spots each day about CSTG members. They?ll understand more about the work we do ? and this will pave the way to more recognition and support at the bargaining table.

This week, the week of August 11, we feature the Department of Transportation?s Sal Galetta. Every day, log on to our website at, and at about 9AM, we?ll have the schedule of spots.

It looks like this is a different issue than the original one - so I just opened a new ticket to cover this particular problem. I'm going to follow up on that ticket and close this one.
