Maximum limit on recipients for emails - Did this this change?

Did this change recently? I get this error in trying to email 200 of our members:

"The size of the message you are trying to send exceeds a temporary size limit of the server. The message was not sent; try to reduce the message size or wait some time and try again. The server responded: 4.5.3 Error: too many recipients."

I just need to send 3-4 emails like this over the next coupe weeks, seems like setting up a listserve in mailman would be a lot of trouble for one time tasks like this.

Hi Michael - it changed a few years ago after our mail servers got banned for sending "spam." It wasn't someone compromising the server that got us banned, but a well-meaning member who was sending hundreds of emails that triggered one of the big providers to ban us. Those providers are extremely sensitive - just sending 50 messages to gmail in a few seconds can trigger it.

Our email list software, on the other hand, is configured to relay via multiple gmail servers and has rate limiting to ensure that each server only sends one message per second to avoid getting banned.

I know it's a pain to set up mailman list for something that is only going out a few times, but it really help keep us off the ban lists!

The other alternative is to break your list down to groups of 50 (which is our current limit).

Thanks Jamie! That helps a lot - I went ahead and did a quick mailman list. Years ago? Damn - could have sworn I was doing these 200+ recipient BCC mailings as late as last year but I never saw the failed messages until now. Appreciate all the effort and this is a small hassle given the bigger ones you folks deal with every day.
