#11944 assigned Question/How do I...?

Jitsi recording

Description

Dear friends,

As a reporter and an avid meet.mayfirst.org fan and evangelist, I would love to be able to use Jitsi to record audio for interviews (with permission of recordees, of course). I see that audio recording is [an official feature](https://jitsi.org/Main/Features), and [here is a doc on configuring it](https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet/blob/83f07a7e676c4381cc191502bb335051de1d9969/doc/manual-install.md#enabling-recording). Is this a feature we can add to meet.mayfirst.org? Or is it already there and I'm just not seeing it?

Thanks, Nathan

Let's get jamie's input on this.

Thanks for pointing this out! It looks like a really useful feature. I'm not sure how exactly to implement it for our members though. Here's my best idea so far:

  • Recordings are possible, but they will be public
  • We configured the server with a well-known password (like "mayfirst")
  • We run a cron job that removes recordings that are older than 2 days (to avoid having the partition fill up)

What do you think? I'd rather allow private recordings, but I'm not sure how to properly share that with all members.

Also, I'm a bit concerned that people will see the record button and assume it is private.

Thoughts?

Glad you're into this idea, though I wonder if there's a way to make this a bit more seamless. Also, the public thing, I think, should be optional; for instance, some sources I might interview could be less forthright if they think that someone other than me could get the file. Here's the spec that would make sense to me:

  • Recording is optional, and all parties are aware when recording is on
  • After a conversation is done, a link to the recording is easily downloadable to all participants (and *only* participants) with a click
  • As you say, a cron job could clear the file away within 24 hours or so

Does that make sense? Is that possible?

Hi Nathan - at the moment I'm trying to stick with what works out of the box. In particular, I'm not sure how to make a recording download-able only by the participants.

I also tried it out to test and the recording button showed up - but when I clicked it I got an error about recording not being properly setup.

Will need some more debugging.

Thanks for looking into this, Jamie. I'll look for a computer-based option to simple direct the soundcard sound into a recorder.
