#11331 assigned Bug/Something is broken

laneta.apc.org mail forwarding to domains not directed to mayfirst.

Reported by: https://id.mayfirst.org/jaimev Owned by: https://id.mayfirst.org/jaimev
Priority: Medium Component: Tech
Keywords: laneta, mail forward, dns, mx1 Cc: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie, https://id.mayfirst.org/erq
Sensitive: no

Description

Another wirnkle in the ongoing laneta transition. all laneta.apc.org e-mails should now forward to a valid e-mail account in each user's corresponding member account before being delivered. However appears that some of these hosting orders were created with the domain of the corresponding organization but this domain was never directed to mayfirst servers. So mail is now bouncing for these addresses accordingly. ticket:11328 is an example case and i just found bounced messages on rose for eduardo13@… -> eduardo13@… I am changing this to eduardo13@… -> eduardo13@… to allow mail delivery.

Seeing same problem for user of laneta.org , this domain is currently pointing to mx1 and should be pointed to stone.mayfirst.org 's ip. It looks like DNS is controlled by ns1.laneta.apc.org nameserver. Can either of you help me change that on mx1?

Same problem with mail for cimacnoticias.com.mx being dirceted to mx25, should be ip for gaspar.

I think changing these DNS records might do more harm than good (since mail may be delivering just fine for the domains and if we switch to our servers, other accounts might start bouncing).

I think your work-around with eduardo is better. And the best option would be to see if there's a different email address in the working email setup that should be used. For example, are any email addresses setup for laneta.org? Do any of them correspond to the email addresses on laneta.apc.org?

Ok will continue the strategy of changing forwarding mail to the user@… address. However I think we do want to encourage members to direct their domains to our DNS servers if they haven't done so and would like to start using the email addresses associated with those domains.

Just changed elsaconde@… -> elsaconde@… to elsaconde@…

So far I've changed the following addresses, the second column is the original forwarding address and the third column is the new address that replaces it.

adivac@… -> adivac@… -> adivac@… alterinfo@… -> alterinfo@… -> alterinfo@… cambios@… -> cambios@… -> cambios@… cambios@… -> cimac@… -> cambios@… desal@… -> desal@… -> desal@… eberhardf@… -> eberhardf@… -> eberhardf@… educreando@… -> educreando@… -> educreando@… enlacecivil@… -> enlacecivil@… -> enlacecivil@… flapina@… -> flapina@… - > flapina@… geacom@… -> geacom@… -> geacom@… geadmin@… -> geadmin@… -> geadmin@… geaedicion@… -> geaedicion@… -> geaedicion@… gea@… -> gea@… -> gea@… geaparticip@… -> geaparticip@… -> geaparticip@… geasas@… -> geasas@… -> geadmin@… gebf@… -> gebf@… -> gebf@… inintlalli@… -> inintlalli@… -> inintlalli@… jcarlos@… -> jcarlos@… -> jcarlos@… jenvalle@… -> jenvalle@… -> jenvalle@… junax@… -> contacto@… -> junax@… lauramar@… -> lauramar@… -> lauramar@… lopezllera@… -> lopezllera@… -> lopezllera@… maru@… -> maru@… -> maru@… memoriaviva@… -> memoriaviva@… -> memoriaviva@… mlr@… -> mlr@… -> mlr@… raulhdezg@… -> raulhdezg@… -> raulhdezg@…

I'm seeing some more laneta addresses be rejected because of abandoned mailboxes.

0 rose:~# grep "to=.*@laneta.apc.org" /var/log/mail.log | grep -o "554 5.7.1 <.*" | awk '{print $3}' | sort -h | uniq -c | sort -rh
     35 <caritasdesc@centroformacion.org>:
     17 <eduardo13@pinapalmera.org>:
     13 <josie@josie.mayfirst.org>:
     13 <flapina@pinapalmera.org>:
      6 <lule@lule.mayfirst.org>:
      4 <herpetario@pg7faunam.mayfirst.org>:
      3 <macaprod@octaviotorres.mayfirst.org>:
      2 <mpf@misionporlafraternidad.mayfirst.org>:
      2 <jgutierrez@lucrecia.mayfirst.org>:
      1 <rosalux@rosalux.org.mx>:

Still a little confused about the right way to get these addresses off the list.

Leaving this open for now. I'd like to go through and check that all laneta addresses in rose are forwarding to valid addresses.

Also, possibly another ticket is to figure out what to do about those original domains that do not point to MFPL servers.
