Slow Server Performance

Hi folks - we're seeing server performance issues in CiviCRM, and I was wondering if there's unusually high disk usage on our server, or anything else that could be leading to slow performance.

We have a scheduled job in CiviCRM that rebuilds smart groups every 15 minutes, and the folks at Palante tell me that this is taking a full 7 minutes to complete, which slows everything else down while it's running (which means about 50% of every hour!). Our mass emails are also taking a long time to submit (10 minutes+), and we had trouble getting a mailing submitted at all last week without timing out - Joseph restarted Apache and MySQL and sent it for us.

I've deleted as many of our smart groups as possible, and we could also have the scheduled job run every hour instead of every 15 minutes, but we honestly didn't have that many smart groups to begin with, and Palante tells me this is unusually slow based on their experience with other similar CiviCRM installations.

Could you take a quick look at our server performance before we take any next steps?

Hi Ben - have you noticed the same behavior since you posted this ticket?

About the same time you posted this ticket, we increase the RAM on another virtual server on the same physical machine. This other virtual guest was swapping heavily, which I suspect was causing disk I/O problems on your machine.

Please let us know if that has improved the situation. If not I can continue investigating.

I'm going to close out this ticket. We deleted all our large smart groups in CiviCRM several months back and replaced them with regular groups that are updated using CiviRules. This brought an end to our server crashes (which I think ended up on a separate ticket, but turned out to be the same issue), and has improved our overall performance.
