#10136 assigned Bug/Something is broken

purge abandoned mailboxes on mx1

The var partition is dangerously full on mx1.

I'm currently running a command to note which files and directories are taking up the most space. You can access it with:

sort -h /root/var.disk.usage.out

It is still running, but the results so far show that we have tens of gigabytes of data stored in the new folders (this is the folder of messages that are unread) of users.

For example:

8.2G /var/mail/virtual/

When a user checks their mailbox, the messages they read are moved from the new folder to the cur folder. Therefore, the last modified date of the cur folder indicates the last time they read a message. In this case:

0 mx1:~# ls -ld /var/mail/virtual/
drwx------ 2 vmail mail 4096 Jun 28 2011 /var/mail/virtual/
0 mx1:~#

So... this mailbox hasn't been checked in over 3 years.

I suggest that we pick a cut off date (1 year? 2 years) and purge all mailboxes that have not been checked.

We'll need to take action quickly or we'll have to extend that partition. Since the partition is already quite big (570GB) I think we should free up disk space instead.
